# Email preferences and unsubscribe

> How members control which Campground emails they receive, how the hosted preference center works, and how you interpret opt-outs when you compose a send.

Campground gives every recipient a way to control optional mail from your organization. Members can update their preferences from inside the app, and any recipient can use the unsubscribe link in a general update to open a hosted preference center. Required program communications still go through — they are not an unsubscribe category.

## What recipients can control

The preference center has two sections:

| Section | What it covers |
| - | - |
| **Announcements and updates** | Newsletters, announcements, and other updates. This is the same as the **General update** send category, and it is the toggle the unsubscribe link acts on. |
| **Automatic notifications** | Emails triggered by your own activity and participation. |

Recipients can also **Unsubscribe from all optional emails** in one step. Direct correspondence and program communication cannot be opted out of.

## The hosted preference center

Every general update email includes an unsubscribe link that opens the **preference center**. Clicking **Unsubscribe** in the email unsubscribes the recipient from announcements and updates immediately, then still opens the preference center so they can review or change other optional emails. They do not have to take any further action — the unsubscribe already happened when they clicked the link.

From the preference center, the recipient can turn **Announcements and updates** or **Automatic notifications** back on, leave them off, or unsubscribe from all optional emails.

The link in the footer is signed and unique to the recipient.

<Note>
  Mail clients that support one-click unsubscribe (Gmail, Apple Mail, Outlook) can opt a recipient out directly from the inbox using the `List-Unsubscribe` header Campground attaches to every general update. That still opens the preference center afterward, with a confirmation that they have been unsubscribed from announcements and updates.
</Note>

## In-app email preferences

Signed-in members can manage preferences from **Account settings → Email preferences**. This view shows the same **Announcements and updates** and **Automatic notifications** toggles as the hosted preference center.

Changes take effect immediately. The next send that runs after a preference change respects it.

## How opt-outs affect your sends

When you compose a **General update**, the delivery summary tells you how many selected recipients will be skipped because they opted out of announcements and updates. Direct correspondence and program communication are not filtered by these preferences — recipients cannot turn those categories off.

<Tip>
  If a recipient tells you they should be receiving announcements again, ask them to visit the preference center from any recent general update you sent.
</Tip>

See [Send and schedule emails to members](/features/email-communications) for the full composer workflow, and [Organization settings](/admin/organization-settings) for setting the mailing address that appears in the unsubscribe footer.
